Advent is a four week season of time when Christians prepare for the birth of Jesus Christ and his expected Second Coming. The term is a Latin version of "coming." It is commemorated with an evergreen wreath of 4 candles, one for each week. Each week has a theme based on the Mass readings for the days. There is also a calendar marking the days leading up to Christmas with a Gospel passage or an act of kindness to be done daily. Children's calendars often include a piece of candy for each day. December 12 is the feast day for Our Lady of Guadalupe, Spanish Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, also called the Virgin of Guadalupe, in Roman Catholicism. It is a celebration, with much fanfare, of the Mother of Jesus, the Virgin Mary’s, appearance before St. Juan Diego in a vision in 1531. The name also refers to the Marian apparition itself. Our Lady of Guadalupe holds a special place in the religious life of Mexico and is one of the most popular religious devotions. Her image has played an important role as a national symbol of Mexico.
