English Department Philosophy

The Justin-Siena English Department strives to prepare students for the reading, writing, and thinking skills which characterize lifelong learners ready to take on the rigors of college-level course work. Through the engaged reading and analysis of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and informational texts, students discuss diverse cultural, social, spiritual, historical, scientific, and philosophical issues and thereby develop their habits of critical thinking, open-mindedness, and empathy. By writing daily, students gain a stronger grasp of writing conventions and develop their own voice to communicate ideas clearly and concisely for a variety of audiences. Upper division courses place a strong emphasis on inquiry, research, and college-level essay-writing.
