Braves Report: November 12

PLAYOFFS: Tennis picks up huge upset.  Football, Volleyball come up just short in picking up upsets of their own
Tennis: The undefeated VVAL champions girls tennis team didn't flinch when they were awarded the 15th seed in NCS play and rode the play of their top 4 singles players to a 4-3 win over second seeded Lick-Wilmerding.  At No. 1, Parvathi Shanker prevailed over Olive Maunupau, 6-4, 6-3. At No. 2, Priyanka Shanker dropped her first set before coming back to win 3-6, 6-0, 6-3. At No. 3, Jenna Curtola won her first set, then fell behind 5-2 in the second set before winning the last five games for a 6-4, 7-5 victory. At No. 4, Bella Rampa cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 win. The Braves (13-1) will play No. 7 Head-Royce of Oakland this week when AQI levels return to healthy levels.

Volleyball: The VVAL and section semi-finalist Braves volleyball team were awarded birth into the CIF State tournament, picking up the 15th seed in the Division III bracket. Traveling to take on the 2nd seeded Nevada Union Miners, the Braves fought hard but ultimately fell 3-0 losing the 3 sets by a combined 7 points.  The Braves hung well with the Miners and in the first set the team quickly fell behind 16-7 before ripping off a 12-2 run powered by senior Julia Sangiacomo and taking a 19-18 lead before ultimately falling 25-23. In the 2nd set the Braves held a 17-12 lead before the Miners reeled off 8 straight points late and ultimately taking the 2-0 advantage. Up 14-12 in the 3rd the Miners again went on an 8-0 run before prevailing for the set and match win. The Braves finish a championship year at 19-6 and the first ever VVAL title, a section semifinalist and a second straight state tournament qualification. The loss also marks the end of the careers for seniors Julia Sangiacomo, Shelby Thomason, Peyton Newell.

FOOTBALL: After already picking up one huge NCS upset over 7 seeded Piedmont the Braves traveled to Del Norte and gave the 2nd seeded Del Norte Warriors all they could handle before falling 37-21. The team led 21-20 early in the 4th before the Warriors put 17 points on the board late to escape with the win. In a back and forth contest where the Braves led at half, the team was led respectively by the quarterback and wide receiver play of Barrett Donahoe and Luigi Albano-Dito. Albano-Dito caught a career high 7 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown on the night. The 2018 season saw the Braves pick up their first playoff win in 3 years and the team appears primed to continue trending up with several key players slated to return next season. The loss marks the end of the careers for Donahoe, Albano-Dito, Shane Rosenthal, Tyler Brazil, John Horn, Conrad Say, Mack Gentry, Michael Fitzgerald, Jordan Bowman-Davis, Colby Bates, Zach Keefer, Christian Ramos-Pedroza, Sahil Dadhwal, Julio Lopez and Jake Shaffner.
