Representing Justin-Siena and Napa County in the State competition in March, Olivia Boles ’19 spoke eloquently on the Assembly Floor at the State Capital.
The poem she recited was Natalie Diaz’s “Abecedarian Requiring Further Examination of Anglikan Seraphym Subjugation of a Wild Indian Reservation.” While Olivia Boles ’19 offered two wonderful, flawless recitations, out of the 46 county champions, she did not place in the final six. “It’s been such a pleasure and joy to work with such a talented and intellectual young woman, said her coach and teacher Ms. Laura Kelley-Weakley. This year’s winner was from Orange County.
In California this year, more than 50,000 teachers in 10,000 schools introduced more than 3 million students to the Poetry Out Loud recitation competition. California’s program is the largest in the nation, with students from 46 of the 58 counties participating. These students were selected from more than 30,000 poetry competitors this year.
