Committed to finding the right fit for college, our college counseling department makes exposure to a wide variety of different programs and campuses a real priority. College Rep visits bring colleges to campus. Despite some rescheduling due to the wildfires, more than 100 colleges made on-campus admission presentations this fall.
For the first time in four years, five UC campuses were included in our list of colleges (UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz). Some of the top colleges in the country are recruiting our students right here on campus including Pomona College, University of Notre Dame, Vanderbilt University, Johns Hopkins, Colgate University, USC, Colby College, Santa Clara University, Lehigh University, and University of Washington among many others. These visits are all organized through college counseling and give our students great exposure to not only the programs out there, but networking access with the people in the admissions process.
College Counseling Workshops are another component to preparing our students for life beyond Justin-Siena. More than 60 seniors attended College Counseling’s 6-hour College Application Workshop on October 25. Counselors were on hand to support seniors with applications and essays as were college admission reps from Oregon State, Saint Mary's College, Seattle University, and University of Oregon. College Counselors have met with senior advisories, to share critical information regarding the importance of highlighting co-curricular achievements on their college applications and when applying for financial aid, and how to send test scores.
We partner with parents throughout the process. Through evening presentations such as College Admission Testing Night, sponsored by Revolution Prep (held on October 4) and Financial Aid 101 for Senior Parents (held on November 2), with a presentation by David Ochoa, Associate Director of Financial Aid at Saint Mary's College, parents gain power information to help guide their students. Our next parent night is for senior parents - Cash for College (aka FAFSA Completion Night) on Wednesday, November 15 in Gasser Center at 6:30 pm.
College Tours are another great way to find the right fit for college! On October 30, 14 sophomores, juniors, and seniors traveled with College Counselor Andrea Flores and Director of Admission Alicia Valdivia to visit San Jose State University and UCSC, part of our twice a year Bay Area College Tour offerings. Our second Bay Area College Tour is in the planning stages; more information will be available in January. College Counseling is still looking for students to join us on our DC to Raleigh, North Carolina College Tour over Spring Break. For more information, contact Andrea Flores at aflores@justin-siena.org or 707.255.0950 ext. 610.
We celebrate successes throughout the college process, which really lasts all four years. College shirt days began a couple weeks ago in recognition of seniors meeting some earl app deadlines. Future College Shirt days will be announced through Schoology. These days are also a fun way for our faculty and staff to show off their college colors (or those of their own children) as we model a college prep attitude for students.
