Cross Country has Strong Showing at Ed Sias Invitational

Justin-Siena cross country co-captain Hannah Chau followed her Stinson Beach Relay win with a stunning first place finish in the 33rd Ed Sias Invitational run at Hidden Valley Park in Martinez. Competing on Saturday, September 9th, just three days after placing first in the MCAL Stinson Beach Relays, Chau took nearly a full minute off her 2016 Ed Sias time. Recording a time of 12:07.7 on the two mile trail course, she is now in the record books as one of the all-time top 35 finishers in the history of this prestigious meet. "We were confident Hannah could place in the top 5 after her 14th place finish last year," said Coach Michael Anderson. "She approached the final hill nearly dead-even with lead runners from St. Joseph Notre Dame and Campolindo. Hannah dug in and edged into the lead as she climbed the hill – then held on through the finish.” Emily Perez of St. Joseph Notre Dame kept the pressure on, placing second in 12:09.6. “Hannah has worked throughout the summer to make her senior year something special. She is off to a strong start," commented Coach Emily Dutton.

Braves co-captain Juliette Nast is also competing well to start her senior season, finishing 15th in 13:11.  “Juliette had an outstanding run. She took half a minute off her 2016 time, again showing the benefits of off-season conditioning,” commented Coach Anderson. With only six girls running, the Lady Braves finished 6th of 20 teams. Melissa Corona, Mia Vlaming, Emily Breneisen and Victoria Politz, helped the Braves move up from last year’s 8th place finish.

The Justin-Siena Varsity boys were paced by Braves new-comer, freshman Casey Potrebic (11:48, 30th), and junior captain Deven Bose (12:01, 41st) to place 10th of 26 teams, much improved over last year's 17th place.  "We are excited about the boys team," said Coach Dutton.  "Four of our top six runners on Saturday were freshmen.  As they gain experience and confidence, their times will continue to improve."  Jacob Guiducci, Max McAlister, Brett Carey, and Niko Radovan ran in the Varsity division. Paul Guisto, Peter Bowman-Davis, Nathan Zehng, Alexander Cox, Vishnu Vijayakumar, and John Morales ran in the Freshman division, competing in their first invitational meet.

The Braves open their regular cross country season on Thursday at Redwood.
