Service and outreach are a core principles in the FIRST robotics league, in which our two teams compete. Members of both Justin-Siena teams spent time at St. Apollonaris 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th classes earlier this week to talk about Justin-Siena, our growing Robotics program, and our Engineering program in general.
They showed off the team robots, their robot game, items from generated from our 3-D printer, trophies from recent competitions, and more. The hope is that their stories and energy will encourage more students to become interested in STEM as they continue through school and to introduce them to the world of robotics.
As the program expands at Justin-Siena from one team last year to two this year, so does the recognition for our students. The FIRST Dean’s List is a prestigious award given by FIRST for members of a robotics team who are nominated by their team members. Justin-Siena is proud to have 4 semi-finalists for the award. Etienne Robin ’18 and Jordan Bowman-Davis ’18 from our veteran team Negative Kelvin, and Hunter Schaufel ’18 and Gary Laski ’18 from our rookie team Terminal Ferocity.
These four semi-finalists traveled to San Jose last Sunday to participate in interviews that will help determine who moves on to become a Finalist. Finalists will be invited to the World Championships in St. Louis to find out if they become Dean’s List winners. Last year Justin-Siena had two semi-finalists, Joey Devine ’17 and Elizabeth Hyde ’17, who went on to become a finalist and traveled to the World Championships last year. Joey and Elizabeth’s leadership in the robotics program has certainly played a role in the success currently being enjoyed and for the growth of the program overall. Way to go Braves!
