North Coast Section Championships

With the winter sports post season almost upon us here is a quick primer on how the North Coast Section (CIF-NCS) qualification and selection process works for team and individual sports:

QUALIFICATION  FOR TEAMS

If a team meets any of the following four standards it may submit an application to the NCS Selection Committee for placement in the Championship Field. If a team fails to meet any of these standards it may not submit an application for selection.

1.  Win the MCAL Championship
2.  Finish .500 or better in overall record (of all games played non-conference and MCAL combined)
3.  Finish .500 or better in MCAL Games
4.  Finish .500 or better vs teams played within the team's NCS Division.

SELECTION

On a pre determined and posted date each eligible team must submit electronically an NCS application citing its record, qualification standard and other information about the team. The head coach for each sport submits this application. The NCS Selection committee first considers how many teams are eligible, if there are more teams than spaces available (typically 16 spots in the field) they set about selecting the Top 16 based on a variety of factors such as record and strength of schedule. In this instance, some eligible teams may not be selected for inclusion in the field.

Once the field is determined the committee goes about seeding the teams 1-16 and sets the bracket.

INDIVIDUAL SPORTS

For sports such as swimming and track and field qualification standards are set by event. These may be timed standards or performance standards such as Top 3 in the MCAL Finals advance. There is a detailed submission process that the head coach executes for the individuals on the team. Some sports are hybrid such as golf in which teams and/or individuals may qualify for NCS Championship Tournaments.

REGIONAL / CIF STATE CHAMPSIONSHIPS

Each sport is different, but in many sports teams may advance from NCS Championship competition into Regional and/or State Champsionship competition. Not all sports have regional and state competition available.

Inclusion in the post season is one measure of distinction. Succeeding in the post season environment truly brands a team as a champion.
