Congratulations to Justin-Siena’s twelve competitors who participated at the 41st Mandarin Speech Contest held this past Saturday in San Francisco: Juliann Gardiner ’17, Maeve Peace ’17, Anna Staggs ’17, Bianca Villao ’17, Julius Brendler ’18, Audrey Lee ’18, Ryan Mulcahy ’18, Juliette Nast ’18, Victoria Su ’18, Anna Zheng ’18, Noah Anderson ’19 and Emily Han ’19.

Special congratulations to Maeve Peace and Victoria Su for winning Honorable Mention Award, Bianca Villao for winning 3rd place, and Juliette Nast for winning 1st place. Also congratulations to Audrey Lee, Bianca Villao and Juliette Nast for performing a talent show, Piano and Singing “It is New Year” at the Entertainment Program.

Returning to the contest for a second year, Juliette Nast ’18 shared "I am so glad I decided to participate in the Mandarin speech contest again this year. I feel that my experience both last year and this year has made me a more confident public speaker. Writing the speech and spending lots of time preparing, has also increased my level of Chinese. I think my speech really reflected who I am and how much I enjoy learning about the Chinese language and culture. This year I did not expect to win anything because I am always very nervous performing in front of people. However, unlike last year, I was able to memorize and understand my whole speech. I would recommend all students taking Mandarin to participate even if you are uncomfortable public speaking because it will help you get over your fear and strengthen your language skills!"

Instructor in Mandarin Ms. Xiaozhen Li said, "this is a very challenging contest. I am so proud of the students for their effort, time, and hard work." Way to go Braves!
