Braves Report: April 3 2019

As seasons reach the midway point, Braves athletics are showing strong.
TRACK: Our Braves Track and Field team had a very successful day at the Castleberry Invitational this past weekend. Conrad Say was on the medal podium four times, winning the 100m, taking 2nd in the 200m, 3rd in the long Jump, and anchoring a fantastic first place performance for the 4x100 relay with teammates Solomone Anitoni, Blake Hoban and Kevin Galvin.  Gianna Troppy won the high jump and discus and Sydney Thweatt won the 400m and was second in the 200m, Claire Sullivan was second in the 100m, as was Liam McDevitt in the High Jump.  The boys 4 x 400m team of Casey Potrebic, Austin Parlett, Aidan Dolinar and Will Melancon took a strong second place over 4 heats of teams. In Palo Alto, Landon Mispagel competed in the prestigious Stanford invitational.  He was 12th overall, and was the highest placing North Bay hurdler.

BASEBALL: Reaches the midpoint of the season at 6-5 overall and 1-2 early in VVAL play.  The team has earned wins over local foes St Helena and Napa while also showing well against strong opponents in their North Coast Section Division.  Senior Luigi Albano-Dito (14 hits, .389 average) leads the offensive attack that is averaging 6.45 runs per game and seniors John Horn and Will Natuzzi lead the team with 7 RBIs.  With rain makeups coming in full force the team will be busy with 5 games in the next 10 days.

SOFTBALL: Improves to 8-2 on the season after picking up a season sweep of El Molino on the road last week.  Michelle and Melissa Lozano combined for 6 hits in the contest and the team is sitting in strong position as they head into VVAL action and come NCS D-IV time down the road.  The team is averaging 11.9 runs per game on the season while allowing only 5.8.

GIRLS LAX: Swept a pair of games over Sonoma County opponents last week, beating Cardinal Newman 17-9 and Petaluma 22-7.  WIth the wins they sit at 5-3 overall and 4-1 in VVAL on the season. The early season success has seen the senior laden squad show off their depth but during the Petaluma game, senior Allison Clark broke 250 points (goals + assists) in her varsity career as a Brave. This feat is similar to a basketball player breaking 1000 points in a high school career. She now stands at 256 points- 182 goals and 74 assists. A huge accomplishment!

BOYS LAX: The team started out VVAL with a loss to Petaluma by a single goal before quickly refocusing for
VVAL games Wednesday night and Friday night. Against Cardinal Newman, who was 5-2 at that point they came out firing in the first quarter and quickly put away a good Cardinal Newman team 11-2. We had another quick turn around since our Wednesday game vs Rancho Cotate was moved to Monday.   Rancho started off in a zone defense and after going down early 1-0, we scored 16 unanswered goals to pick up our first win against Rancho Cotate. Our record stands at 8-2 (3-1 VVAL). We have our hardest opponent yet in Casa Grande coming to our place on Friday night.  They are 12-0 and one of the top ranked teams in the state. We having been looking forward to this match up all year and we are excited to see what we can do.

SWIMMING: The Girls Swim team lost a tough match to Sonoma on Friday, however, the boys team was able to beat Sonoma in a very close match, 82-80! Highlights included 1 more NCS consideration time for the boys and Girls medley relay scores their first NCS consideration time.

BOYS TENNIS: The Braves' Tennis Team welcomed exchange student Jakob Schultz on the team after clearing eligibility with NCS. Jakob moved to the #1 singles slot in time to take on the undefeated Vintage Crushers. In our first meeting, Vintage won all seven matches, dropping 14 straight sets. With Jakob in the line up, Justin took three of the first six matches to tie the match at 3-3, leaving it to the third doubles team of Sicheng Guo and Peter Bowman-Davis. Unfortunately, the Crushers were too strong for the Braves, the final score being 4-3 Vintage. No other team in the league has gotten closer than 5-2. Wins came from Captain Jose Chopitea, Captain Nick Reyna and the team of Captain Paul Kelly and Luc DeMartini.  On Thursday, the Braves hosted Petaluma and dropped them 5-4. The win broke a fourth place tie with the Trojans, improving the team record to 4-4. Wins came from Jakob Schultz, Jose Chopitea, Nick Reyna, Paul Kelly, and the doubles team of Peter Bowman-Davis and Luc Demartini.
