A Gala for the History Books

On April 8, 2017, nearly 250 guests gathered in the historic Vintner’s Hall of Fame Barrel room at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Justin-Siena.
Kicking off a year of festivities to mark the milestone starting back in September, Justin-Siena’s Golden Gala at Greystone was the pinnacle event where all were invited to “return to our roots to toast our future.” Founded as two schools in 1966 by the De La Salle Christian Brothers and the Dominican Sisters of San Rafael, the school thrives today because of the leadership and generosity of all those who have gone before. The Christian Brothers operated their winery out of the historic Greystone building for much of the last century before selling the business in the late 80s. Former chemistry teacher-turned winemaking pioneer (the late) Br. Timothy Diener has a renowned corkscrew collection on permanent display at Greystone – and fittingly, that is where guests arrived for a champagne reception at the Gala.

Student Body Presidents Stanford-bound Neha Sidhu ’17 and BYU-bound Joseph Celaya ’17 gave a brief welcome once guests were seated where they expressed their sincere gratitude for playing a part in the high school experience that has shaped them and prepared them for the next chapter in their lives. The welcome was followed by a sun prayer before dinner offered by students on the Justin-Siena Advanced Choir program. Following the meal, President Robert Jordan shared a few remarks and paid tribute to our honoree, Mr. Bob Zeller, with a special presentation, and Senator Bill Dodd ’74 presented Mr. Zeller with a senatorial proclamation for his commitment to the school in its 50-year history.

There was a Live Auction and then an after party in the Anniversary Lounge in the back of the Barrel Room which featured live jazz, passed cordials with Christian Brothers Brandy and local Anette’s chocolates.

In addition to a number of Christian Brothers and Dominican Sisters, guests included Senator Bill Dodd (Class of 1974) and his wife Mary; Robert Zeller, Sr. who was recognized as the 50th Anniversary Honoree; alumni from every decade; parents; friends; and community members.

Thank you to all who supported this event from near and far. Here's to the next 50!
