
Student Organizations
and Activities
Every student of Justin-Siena is invited and encouraged to participate in some phase of student activity. The activities outside the classroom, together with experiences in the classroom, provide the student with an environment leading toward maturity and a sense of responsibility.
STUDENT COUNCIL:
The Student Council is composed of the student body officers, the appointed cabinet, all class officers, and representatives of student organizations. It is the body responsible for the management of student activities and programs. It provides leadership for the school community by developing attitudes of good citizenship, promoting harmonious relations throughout the school, and providing a forum for student expression. Its legislative and executive authority, stem from the Principal, the Vice Principal of Student Life, and the Director of Student Activities.
Clubs and interest groups provide the extracurricular activities designed to enhance and enrich the student’s program of learning at Justin-Siena High School. The following list of organizations has been recommended by the Student Council and approved by the administration.
Any group wishing to become a club must meet with administrative and Student Council approval. This may be accomplished by providing the Director of Student Activities with a copy of the club’s proposed constitution (or purpose if constitution is in process) and the name of a faculty member willing to serve as moderator. The Director of Student Activities will make a recommendation to the Vice Principal of Student Life and shall inform parties of interest of administrative approval and let them know of the date for making a presentation to the Student Council for acceptance of the club.
AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL
Moderator: Ms. Georgine Clarke
Amnesty International promotes the advancement of human rights throughout the world and advocates on behalf of oppressed populations. The Justin-Siena chapter of A.I. will spread awareness about current human rights issues and actively campaign on behalf of human rights abuses.
BBQ CLUB:
Moderator: Mr. Chappell
The BBQ Club monthly hosts grilling at lunch and enhancing their expertise of the art of BBQ, while also hosting a grill-off during Founder's Day activities.
CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP FEDERATION (CSF):
Moderator: Mrs. Jill Sinclair
The California Scholarship Federation is a statewide federation based on high scholastic achievement. CSF is open to second-semester freshman and first-semester sophomores as Associate Members and to second-semester sophomores, all juniors, and all seniors as Full Members. For Life Membership, a student must be a Full Member for four semesters, including one in the senior year. Students wishing to join CSF must apply each semester, except the second semester of the senior year. Applicants must also meet the criteria for membership, which is explained in the CSF Application Form, available from the CSF moderator or on the website under Downloadable Forms. A "D" grade in any subject disqualifies the applicant from membership that semester. Only semester grades are counted toward membership. CULINARY CLUB:
Moderator: Mr. Michael Douglass
Twice a month, the Culinary Club will meet for a potluck based on various flavors from around the world. During the meetings, the main focus will be world-class foods while we learn about different cultures and what they eat.
ECOLOGY CLUB:
Moderator: Ms. Daphne Birkmyer and Mr. Rick Landry
The Ecology Club was founded in order to enhance student awareness of the environment and local ecology. The club actively participates through recycling, Earth Day, habitat restoration, education, and garbage clean-up of local Napa natural areas and waterways.
FRIDAY NIGHT LIVE (FNL):
Moderator: Mrs. Marsha Niemann and Ms. Daphne Birkmyer
This is a nationally recognized group formed in order to involve students in drug-free activities. FNL organize several activities including Red Ribbon Week, the Great American Smoke Out, New Year’s Eve Party, and many others.
FRENCH CLUB:
Moderator: Mrs. Annick Bouldt
This club offers a wonderful opportunity for students to explore French cuisine, history, art, and language. Student participates in French games, off campus activities and corresponds with students from France.
INTERACT CLUB:
Moderator: Mrs. Caroline Gerlomes
Interact is a national high school service club for girls and guys sponsored locally by the North Napa Rotary Club. Interact members have the opportunity to work together in a fellowship dedicated to school, community, and international service.
ITALIAN CLUB:
Moderator: Jeannine Gruenwald
This club gathers students who want to grow in their understanding and appreciation of all things Italian: culture, history, cuisine, art, and language.
JUSTIN-SIENA TEEN AGE REPUBLICANS (J-STARS):
Moderator: Mrs. Sally DiGiacomo
The J-S.T.A.R.S. brings together students who wish to learn more about and participate in the activities of the Republican Party. The club encourages students to follow politics and to become interested and informed voters. The club is open to everyone.
KEY CLUB:
Moderator: Mrs. Caroline Gerlomes
The Key club is a service club sponsored by the Kiwanis clubs of America. Justin-Siena’s Chapter is sponsored by Kiwanis Club of Napa. The objectives of the Key Club are to develop initiative and leadership, to provide experience in working together, to serve the school and community, and to prepare for useful citizenship. Key Club sponsors activities that include the annual used book drive, co-sponsors the Homecoming Dance, and many other activities.
LITERARY MAGAZINE (LIT-MAG):
Moderator: Mr. Thomas McDermott
The Literary Magazine provides students the opportunity to become published authors and artists through the annual publication of the Justin-Siena High School Literary Magazine, Sirens' Call.
MULTICULTURAL CLUB:
Moderator: Mr. Adolfo Guevara
The Multicultural Club is open to all students. Its primary goals are to educate people about the diverse cultures in our world and to appreciate the many cultures within the school community. Activities include recognition of important holidays, participation in community activities and festivals, guest speakers, and field trips.
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY (NHS):
Moderator: Mrs. Jill Sinclair
NHS is a national scholastic organization for juniors and seniors. The purpose of this organization is to create enthusiasm for scholarships, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools. Students must apply each year in order to be eligible, students must maintain a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA. To apply, students fill out an application which lists their achievements in the academic, leadership and service areas. Students are also required write a brief essay and get three teacher recommendations. A faculty council meets to determine the eligibility of each applicant. Members of the NHS complete three service activities throughout the year. For more information please see the NHS website is www.nhs.us .
OUTDOOR CLUB:
Moderator: Mr. Richard Landry
This club was founded in order to enhance the students’ awareness of their environment. The club sponsors trips such as hiking, white water rafting, mountain biking, and other such adventures to appreciate our environment. The trips occur approximately once a mouth depending on the weather conditions. Most of the excursions are local, but a few are overnight because of the distance or activity.
SPANISH CLUB:
Moderator: Mrs. Natasha Engering-Ward
This club provides the opportunity for students to become more involved in the Spanish language. This will keep the enthusiasm and passion for Spanish alive by exploring other aspects of the language and culture.
SPIRIT CLUB:
Moderator: Mrs. Patricia Wells
The spirit club encourages students to attend and support athletic events throughout the year. Students wear blue shirts and sit together positively cheering and supporting our teams and student athletes.
STUDENT AMBASSADORS:
Student Ambassadors are responsible for creating a welcoming atmosphere for visitors and provide them with an introduction to our school in a friendly, enthusiastic and informative manner. Student Ambassadors engage in school service and public relations for Justin-Siena while developing leadership and social skills. Student Ambassadors are required to participate throughout the year including helping with Information Day, the Annual Fund Phon-a-thon, Grandparents’ Day, Shadow Days and the Napa Valley Business Showcase. Other events may include tours, President’s Circle dinner, Homecoming BBQ, Legacy Luncheon, Easter Egg Hunt, Wine Auction, End of the Year Lunch for Seniors, and assisting with any other special events.
THINK PINK
Moderator: Mr. Chris Swain
Justin-Siena Think Pink Club was created to raise awareness about Breast Cancer and its affects on families and communities. We will be reaching out to the Justin-Siena community as well as the tri-county community. We have a goal of raising $500 a year to donate to the American Cancer Society of Napa. We will be encouraging our school as well as other schools to help by holding bake sales and keeping donation boxes in the schools. We will also be selling pink “Breast Cancer” bracelets. The schools we will be reaching out to include Justin-Siena High School, St. Apollinaris School, and St. Francis School.
YOUNG DEMOCRATS CLUB:
Moderators: Mr. Day
The Young Democrats brings together students who wish to learn more about and participate in the activities of the Democratic Party. The club encourages students to follow politics and to become interested and informed voters. The club is open to everyone.
