Alcohol Access Survey

Summary of Survey

JUSTIN-SIENA YOUTH ACCESS TO ALCOHOL SURVEY RESULTS

Underage Drinking is the #1 contributing factor to death of people under 21 in the U.S.

Friday Night Live is a club on the Justin-Siena campus that is concerned about the issues of teen alcohol use and youth access to alcohol.  FNL members conducted research in order to better understand these issues and develop data-driven recommendations about how to best address alcohol use among Justin-Siena students.  They focused on learning the answers to these key questions:

1) What kinds of MESSAGES do young people see and hear about alcohol use?

2) Why are young people using alcohol?

3) How are young people able to ACCESS alcohol, despite existing laws?

A summary and the complete survey is now on the Web Site.

What is Friday Night Live?

The Friday Night Live Club was started in the late 80’s.  It got it’s name because Friday night was the night when most teenagers die from alcohol and drug use.  The idea was to keep kids alive on Friday night.  We originally planned activities on Friday night.  Over the years, the club has changed.  We are involved with a variety of events that include:  Red Ribbon Week, the Great American Smoke Out, coat drives, we sponsor families at Christmas, the Youth/Senior Bowling Tournament, Wellness days, and we make over 100 Easter baskets which we deliver to needy children in Vacaville, Fairfield, and Napa.

This year, our members approached the police department to adopt a program called TRACE.  It is a program that not only holds underage drinkers responsible for their actions but also people who supply them with alcohol.  We are also involved in a Town Hall meeting that will take place on May 13th and will involve the entire city of Napa.  The purpose is to bring key people together in hopes of reducing underage drinking.  (See the flyer.) We will be petitioning the city counsel and county supervisors to adopt a social host ordinance.

We hope that many of you will choose to be involved, too.  This only works if we have the entire community behind the effort.
