New Theatre Director for the Braves
NAPA, CA Justin-Siena is thrilled to announce an exciting new hire in the Visual and Performing Arts Department. Poised to write the next chapter in the storied Justin-Siena Theatre history and bring a high standard of educational excellence to the students entrusted to his care, Mr. James Bailey is eager to join the Braves community—officially beginning his tenure on October 3.
James Thomas Bailey is a multi-faceted theatre artist and educator and is well known and highly regarded in both the theatre and educational theatre communities. Appearing at numerous public and private events across the country as a master teacher he offers a breadth of knowledge and accessibility that makes him equally at home in a variety of settings, from major corporations to theatre festivals, and youth events. He has served as teacher, trainer, speaker, guest artist, and creative consultant.
According to Principal Noel Hesser, "James Bailey will be a remarkable asset to our students and our entire community. He is equipped to take the already stellar theater program to the next level. Our students work so hard and have such deep commitment—they deserve someone like Mr. Bailey—I am so pleased to welcome him to Justin-Siena.”
Although he has an impressive resume of stage credits, his deep roots in and commitment to education make him a great fit in joining the dedicated Justin-Siena faculty. Mr. Bailey is a former President of California Educational Theatre Association representing 300 theatre educators statewide. His fourteen years as an educator, eight of which have been at a Catholic high school in Southern California, will serve him well as he transitions to his new home in Napa. As a full-time faculty member and theatre director his classes have included Drama I, II, III, IV, Stagecraft, ESL Speech, and English. He directed one-act plays, full-length plays, and musicals; coached prize-winning students for DTASC and Thespian Festivals and for the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts examinations; directed an improv team; served as advisor for International Thespian Troupe and Theatre Club; and helped expand curriculum and developed a thriving parent support organization.
Mr. Bailey has produced many successful shows, including Los Angeles, west coast and American premieres. Some stage highlights include Children of Eden, Oklahoma, Fiddler on the Roof, Once on this Island, Guys and Dolls, Anything Goes, and The King and I.
As an actor, Mr. Bailey has appeared in more than forty productions across the country. Favorite roles include: Mozart in Amadeus, Puck in the world premiere musical Dreamers and John Worthing in The Importance of Being Earnest. Mr. Bailey has appeared on The Drew Carey Show and Tuesdays with Morrie, a film starring Jack Lemmon, based on the best selling novel. He was also a regular on the nationally syndicated television show Quick Witz and can be seen in several national commercials.
Since 1988 Mr. Bailey has served as Artistic Director and Producer of ComedySportz, one of Los Angeles leading improvisational theatre companies, and the longest running show in Los Angeles (23 years). Through ComedySportz, he created a program for teens called The High School League®, where students play improv as varsity sport and earn varsity letters—it’s the largest teen improv theatre program in the United States (with more than 80 schools in southern California). He also recently developed a children's program (preschool) using improvisation for the Disney Channel. For the last several years he has worked with the US Embassy and Ministry of Culture in Cyprus to train more than 700 teachers in theatre education techniques in both southern Cyprus and the Turkish-occupied territory in the north. Additionally he trained professional actors with the state theatre (THOC) and students at Near East University (north) and taught the embassy’s first bi-communal theatre workshop.
Mr. Bailey has an honors degree in theatre with a minor in arts management from Marquette University where he was awarded the Liberace Scholarship for Creative and Performing Arts and was named Outstanding Senior. His graduate studies were in the professional actor's training program at California Institute of the Arts, with additional studies in education at California State University-Northridge and vocal and piano studies at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, where he was also a scholarship student.
President Robert Jordan looks forward to welcoming Mr. Bailey. “I am impressed that Mr. Bailey not only brings his gifts and talents as a performing arts professional, but most importantly, his passion and commitment as an educator. Once again, Justin-Siena is blessed.”
Please join us in welcoming Mr. Bailey to the Home of the Braves! There are great things in store for the Justin-Siena Theatre. Sempre Avanti!
