Geology Students Serve at Local Watershed

This year, Mr. Landry’s Geology of the National Parks class is participating in a service learning experience with the Napa Resource Conservation District (NRCD).
Now in its second year, the important partnership forged by this class literally takes education out of the classroom and into the field.

NRCD sponsors the Land Smart program that gives high school students the chance to work and learn in their local watershed. For their November field experience, Mr. Landry’s students traveled to the Linda Falls Preserve in Angwin. Students worked in and near Conn Creek observing igneous geology, collecting and identifying benthic macroinvertebrates (small critters that live on the bottom of streams and lakes) to gauge stream health, measuring stream velocity and flow, and replanting native species in the chaparral forest. In addition to their service project, the students were able to squeeze in a hike to the base of Linda Falls for lunch and were rewarded with some great views of the now flowing stream.
