A Letter to Our Neighbors

We would like to update you on a change of direction for the proposed property development on the under-used portion of our campus along Solano Avenue.
After careful inventory of clearly voiced concerns from neighbors, and discussions with some neighbors regarding alternative ideas, we recommended changing the project from retail to a community care facility for older adults –sometimes known as senior housing.

This new proposal addresses many of the concerns neighbors have been expressing including traffic, noise, and a desire to maintain the residential character of the area. This project is also consistent with other development along Solano Avenue, including other senior communities in the area. Still smaller in scale compared to the original Lowe’s project proposal, the senior housing project will take up only 5.8 acres of our 40-acre parcel.

Since the fall of 2009, Justin-Siena has been pursuing ways to utilize our greatest asset, our land, for our educational mission. Comprised of 40 acres, Justin-Siena has one of the largest parcels of any Catholic high school in the greater Bay Area. Even though school enrollment is healthy today, we have an obligation to look towards the future as the cost of education continues to rise. The school has been looking to lease a portion of our property to act in many ways like an endowment that will allow the school to maintain our commitment to tuition assistance, while augmenting the experience of all our students through program and facility enhancements.

We, at Justin-Siena, believe that not only will this help address many concerns of our neighbors, but it also creates a good fit for our school community. Having a senior residence in close proximity to our campus will allow for cross-curricular outreach and service-learning opportunities, intergenerational learning projects, and possible student internships. In addition, the vibrancy of a high school will keep senior residents active and engaged.

We promise to keep you updated on the progress of the project, and we look forward to working with our developer, Oppidan and you, our neighbors. We are seeking a well-designed and attractive project that meets the needs of our community and our school.   As information becomes available it will be communicated through our school website.

We invite you to attend a neighborhood meeting on Wednesday, July 29 at 6:30 PM in the Justin-Siena Dining Hall. Representatives from Oppidan, Justin-Siena, and the neighborhood will facilitate the meeting. We thank you for your patience on this important project and we are especially grateful for those neighbors who took the time to visit with school officials or our developers to express their concerns and offer ideas. We wish all of you a safe and restful summer.
