Justin-Siena Theatre Presents Once on This Island

Coming to the Lincoln Theatre for 2 weekends only opening February 19, Justin-Siena’s award-winning Theatre program brings you this highly original and theatrical Caribbean adaptation of the popular fairy tale, The Little Mermaid.
Complete with live, professional orchestration and acclaimed choreography, this ensemble explores the social prejudice of class and wealth distinction through the powerful storytelling tools of song and dance.

From the Tony Award-winning songwriting team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Seussical, Ragtime), Once On This Island garnered eight Tony Award nominations for its Broadway run, including Best Musical, Book, and Score.

Boasting an ensemble cast of 75+ students with big musical numbers including “We Tell the Story” and “Waiting Life” and “Mama Will Provide” the Caribbean rhythms will have you dancing in your seats—especially as you enjoy the inspired choreography of local favorite, Lisa Clark Schmeling.

Who doesn’t enjoy colorful, ensemble song and dance numbers that deliver a powerful message? The notion of love overcoming societal boundaries reverberates throughout to reinforce lessons that have become embedded in the moral and social consciousness of adults and children. True to Haitian culture, storytelling is a theatrical event; singing, dancing, and narrative are all intertwined to create an immersive communal experience.

Join us at the Lincoln Theater where “We Tell the Story.”

SYNOPSIS
This high-energy Caribbean-influenced musical folk tale tells the poignant story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who falls in love with the well-born Daniel and is aided by the gods of earth, water, and love in her quest to be with him—a daunting quest that will test the strength of her love and enormous heart. We follow Ti Moune’s journey through glorious and joyful song and dance exploring universal issues that affect us all: love, anger, forgiveness, faith and mortality. We learn the love, indeed, is more powerful than the forces of prejudice, hatred, and death. And the best of the human spirit prevails as the gods turn Ti Moune into a tree that grows strong and tall to break the wall that separates the societies and ultimately unites them.
